Day 13 of Seahawks training camp, and another entry in my visual journal of camp.

What started as a daily challenge to get myself ready for the upcoming season has become a project that is equal parts fun and…nerve-wracking.

It’s hard — at least for me — to get “up” every day and try to make something visually interesting, storytelling, or hopefully both.

In this frame, Seahawks quarterbacks Sam Darnold, Drew Lock and Jalen Milroe are practicing their dropbacks and throws to targets under the watchful eye of passing game coordinator Jake Peetz. I worked hard on this one — and made a LOT of frames — moving with each snap, trying to find the exact position where the composition would come together.

To the untrained eye, the quarterbacks are simply dropping back, finding a target and throwing. But so much of what they’re working on is footwork, because so much of the passing game depends on timing.

The steps have to be consistent on every drop. Receivers are running timed routes. The offensive line needs to know where the quarterback will be in the pocket and when. Those details matter, and they drill it every single day.

Hundreds, then thousands, of repetitions later, the footwork becomes instinctive. They don’t have to think about it anymore and can concentrate on reads, rushers and the countless other things an NFL quarterback has to process and execute.

There’s a lesson in there for photographers, too — as we prepare for our own seasons, our fundamentals might be follow focus, tracking the ball, identifying receivers while the ball is in the air, anticipating what happens next, or even switching cameras mid-play.

The fundamentals are different. The preparation is the same.
