Day 12 of Seahawks training camp, and another chance to make a frame (or, in this case frames) for my visual journal of camp. The impetus behind the project is I needed to get better - see better, see more, have a wider vision, and work on the skills I’ll need to be better this upcoming season than last.

The Seahawks held practice at Lumen Field for their annual Football Fest, and being back in the stadium felt more “game-like”. True, the first preseason game is only a week away but getting some reps in specific situations is always helpful. One of the skill areas  I wanted to work on was in the “red zone” (the area closest to the goal line). Often, this requires having quick reactions because the action is so much closer to me than a play at midfield. Also, switching lenses from a Nikon 400mm f/2.8 S lens to a 70-200mm or 24-120mm zoom is a skill that for me takes practice. Lots of it.

The first frame is of an amazing catch by receiver Montorie Foster, Jr, in the corner of the end zone. On these plays, one has to judge whether to grab the wide zoom (24-120mm) or the medium telephoto zoom (70-200mm) while the ball is in the air. Originally I was disappointed that I didn’t choose to go wider on this shot as I’d to show him in relation to the end zone, but his reach and his fingertips on the ball are more clearly seen with the 70-200mm which I used here.

On the second frame, the quarterback rolled right and looked my way, and I was able to see tight end Elijah Arroyo heading to the corner of the end zone and made this frame with the wider 24-120mm zoom.

The third frame, of defensive back Nehemiah Pritchett tipping away a pass, is shot across the field with a 400mm lens, , and when one is in the end zone, you have to be ready for a play that could occur right in front of you or on the opposite side of the field.
