Hello, Besties. ❤️

Today’s conversation comes from a place of gratitude.

I’ve seen a lot of people saying that DL Hughley “isn’t funny anymore” because he chooses to use his platform for spoken-word advocacy and social commentary. I see it differently.

DL Hughley was never born simply to entertain anyone. He is a comedian, a storyteller, and a citizen with every right to use his voice as his life and convictions evolve. Whether you agree with him or not, I believe we should resist reducing people to what they can do for our amusement.

During one of the lowest seasons of my life, BET Comic View brought genuine laughter back into my home. I will never forget that gift. Sometimes laughter isn’t just entertainment—it is medicine.

Today, what continues to resonate with me is his willingness to speak about young men who have been overlooked, abandoned, or written off. We cannot expect people to flourish if we refuse to invest in them. As the African proverb reminds us:

“The child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth.”

That proverb isn’t an excuse for harmful behavior. It’s a reminder that neglect has consequences, and building stronger families and communities matters.

I’ve also learned something deeply personal along the way. There are moments when I’ve felt like an outsider myself—misunderstood, criticized, or easy to stereotype. Maybe that’s one reason I still affectionately call myself your Pet Florida Cracker in the Pacific Northwest. I believe humor can help us lower our defenses, but compassion is what ultimately helps us understand one another.

You don’t have to agree with every public figure to appreciate the good they’ve brought into your life. Gratitude and thoughtful disagreement can exist at the same time.

Thank you for joining me as we continue having conversations that challenge us to laugh, think, grow, and care for one another.

With love,
Heidi ❤️
