Fat Loss Isn’t Just a Number on the Scale

By Luis Villasenor, BS in Nutrition, Co-founder of Ketogains & DrinkLMNT

You can be losing fat, gaining muscle, looking leaner, getting stronger… and barely losing weight.

That’s not a contradiction. That’s body recomposition.

The scale measures your total mass. It cannot tell you how much of today’s number is:

* Body fat vs. muscle
* Water retention
* Glycogen
* Food still being digested
* Bowel contents
* Inflammation from hard training

And this is where a lot of people screw up perfectly good progress.

They see the scale stall for three or four days and immediately cut calories, add cardio, or assume their metabolism is “broken.”

Look at trends, not snapshots.

Track your weekly average weight, but combine it with waist measurements, progress pictures, how your clothes fit, and what’s happening with your strength in the gym.

If your weight is relatively stable but your waist is shrinking, your physique is improving, and your lifts are progressing, you’re probably not stalled.

You may simply be recomping.

And yes, you can lose fat and gain muscle simultaneously. They won’t happen at the same rate, and it becomes harder as you get leaner and more advanced, but it absolutely happens—especially with adequate protein and progressive resistance training.

The objective isn’t simply to weigh less.

It’s to lose unnecessary body fat, preserve or build muscle, get stronger, and improve your body composition.

So stop asking only:

“How much weight did I lose?”

Start asking:

“What is happening to the weight I have?”

That tells you a lot more.
