"Science can help you become the voice of nature." 🐢

Meet Callie Veelenturf, marine conservation biologist and National Geographic Explorer studying sea turtles and marine ecosystems.

As Founder of The Leatherback Project, Callie works alongside Indigenous Peoples and local communities to strengthen marine conservation, connecting them with government agencies to advance environmental protection and recognition of the Rights of Nature.

Her work means observing changes in the ocean and gathering the evidence needed to understand how human activities affect species and ecosystems. That evidence helps shape conservation measures that make a real difference.

Because protecting nature starts with understanding it. Data turns observations into evidence, and evidence into action.

Understanding the world is the first step to changing it, and a new generation of scientists is already leading that change.

Under the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development, UNESCO is partnering with the AXA Foundation for Human Progress and nature_the_journal to shine a spotlight on this new generation.
