February 27 marks International Polar Bear Day — but why this date? ❄️

At this time of year, across the Arctic, polar bear mothers are in hidden snow dens with their newborn cubs. This period, known as denning, is when cubs enter the world blind, tiny (about one pound), and completely dependent on their mother for survival. They remain sheltered together until spring, when the cubs are strong enough to step out onto the sea ice.

As climate change accelerates in the Arctic, denning polar bear mothers and cubs face growing challenges. Through the International Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences (2025–2034), UNESCO advances research, monitoring, and global cooperation to protect frozen ecosystems, strengthen scientific knowledge, and preserve biodiversity. 🌍🐾
