Mount Kilimanjaro is more than Africa’s highest peak. Its glaciers and cloud forests feed rivers and aquifers that sustain over two million people across Tanzania and Kenya.

For rangers and conservation officers like Angela Nyaki at @mountkilimanjaro  National Park, a UNESCO #WorldHeritage site, this iconic ‘water tower' is more than a landmark, it is a lifeline.

Yet Kilimanjaro is changing. Glaciers are retreating, forests are under pressure, and the water systems communities depend on are increasingly vulnerable. Managed cooperatively and guided by science, however, water can shift from a source of risk to a driver of resilience and shared prosperity.

Through its Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme, @‌UNESCO supports science-based management of shared basins and aquifers, strengthening cooperation, data systems and joint action across borders, including 106 shared aquifers in Africa.

With @fao, UNESCO is investing $8 million in the Kilimanjaro Water Tower project to 🔍 map hidden aquifers, 🌱 reforest 400 km² of cloud forest, and 💦 restore natural groundwater storage.

Because protecting Kilimanjaro means strengthening long-term water security #ForThePeople.
