Uganda is famous for its gorilla trekking, but travel a little north and you’ll find Kibale National Park - home to more than 1,500 wild chimpanzees.

Only a small number of these have been habituated - a careful process carried out over years that allows them to become accustomed to the presence of humans without becoming domesticated.

Permits are expensive, visitor numbers are strictly controlled and, on a standard trek, you get just one hour with the chimpanzees once you find them.

This is a reason I feel differently about wildlife tourism in Uganda!

Uganda has built tourism into its conservation model. Instead of wildlife tourism and conservation working against each other, the value of seeing these animals alive, wild and in their natural habitats helps create an economic reason to protect them.

Tourism revenue helps fund the Uganda Wildlife Authority and the protection of the parks and wildlife, while 20% of park entry fees are shared with communities living around Uganda’s protected areas, funding projects including schools, health centres, water infrastructure and initiatives to reduce human-wildlife conflict.

And the results of Uganda’s conservation efforts?:

• Uganda’s chimpanzee population is now estimated at 6,075, up from 5,072 in 2021/22
• Kibale alone protects 1,500+ wild chimpanzees
• Uganda is home to more than 18,000 recorded species of plants and animals
• Buffalo numbers have risen from 32,235 to 41,548 since 2021/22
• Zebra numbers have risen from 17,762 to 20,942
• Southern white rhinos have increased from 43 to 61
• And Uganda is home to roughly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas

This is what wildlife tourism can look like when the wildlife is the reason the place is protected in the first place. I just wish more countries adopted this approach - especially in Southeast Asia!
