We’ve just touched down in Uganda and already seen one of the rarest birds on earth… and somehow found one WITH A THREE-WEEK-OLD BABY 😭

Shoebills are one of the worlds rarest birds, and haven’t changed in appearance in 30 million years so they look almost prehistoric.

There are thought to be around 3000-5000 globally, 1,000 in Uganda, and only 20 live in this area - so just spotting one was something I was desperately hoping we’d get lucky enough to do.

But then we got closer and realised she had a tiny 3 week old chick with her 🥹

Shoebills breed incredibly slowly (once every 5 years) and usually only raise one chick successfully, so seeing one this young in the wild was a ridiculously special encounter.

If you land in Entebbe, this is super close to the airport and an incredible first experience in the country. These unique looking birds are currently classified as Vulnerable, which means they’re considered at high risk of extinction in the wild.
