Loneliness can be as deadly as smoking.

We tend to treat it like a passing mood. It is actually a health risk. The U.S. Surgeon General found that being socially disconnected carries a mortality risk on par with smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day. It is linked to a 29% higher risk of heart disease, a 32% higher risk of stroke, and, in older adults, a 50% higher risk of dementia.

Here is the hopeful part. In the world’s blue zones, the longest-lived places on earth, almost no one grows old alone. Connection is not something they schedule, it is built into daily life, and it may be their most powerful longevity habit of all.

Three ways they do it 👉

Family first. They keep aging parents and grandparents close, often right in the home, and they commit to a life partner.

The right tribe. They surround themselves with a few friends who reinforce healthy habits. The Okinawans call these lifelong groups moais.

Belong. They show up, again and again, to the community, faith, and social gatherings that give them a deep sense of belonging.

You cannot supplement your way out of loneliness. No pill matches the power of people. So call someone today, pull up an extra chair, and invest in the relationships that will carry you to 100.
