🎓🦁 Join us in celebrating National Transfer Student Week, where we highlight the stories of students like Sophie Machesky.

Sophie is a fourth-year student set to graduate in 2025 with a degree in Corporate Communications. She serves as the editor-in-chief of The Roaring Lion student newspaper and is also a freelance writer for The Herald-Standard.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today without transferring,” Sophie said. “Penn State Fayette is five minutes from my house, and with my major having smaller classes, it’s easier to make friends. That’s totally different than being in a college with more students.”

She continued, “I was part of the newspaper at my old university, but we never met. They would assign you something, and it was a toss-up whether your article would get picked. Whenever I was applying here, I asked if there was a student newspaper. That was a big win for me, having a club that I actually wanted to join. Having a close-knit group that you’re interested in and feeling safe and secure, especially being close to home, is very important for student success.”
