Brad Little’s administration submitted Idaho to compete for a federal Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campus.

I’m not arguing that all nuclear waste should be removed from Idaho. I understand that’s how nuclear energy works, and I support nuclear innovation.

To be clear, I support nuclear energy and the incredible work happening at Idaho National Laboratory. What I do not support is volunteering Idaho for a project involving nuclear waste without a clear public conversation about exactly what Idaho is agreeing to host. What I oppose is Brad Little volunteering Idaho to take on a dramatically larger share of the nation’s nuclear waste while selling it to Idahoans as an economic opportunity. He talks about jobs and investment. My question is simple: where is that guarantee in writing?

The INL site sits above the Eastern Snake River Plain Aquifer. Eastern Idaho is near seismically active areas, and that risk cannot be brushed aside. An earthquake could damage the systems containing nuclear waste and create a pathway for contamination to reach groundwater. Protecting the Snake River Plain Aquifer has to come before political ambition.

This is our water. Our land. Our future. A governor should never treat Idaho as Washington, D.C.’s convenient answer to the nation’s nuclear waste problem.💙
