Flash back 💡 🤔 

I was selected to coach the 2nd team for U16 Representative Basketball. One of my first seasons coaching Representative basketball in QLD.

The 1st team coach, a prominent coach at the time, “instructed me” to pick two kids he wanted on the 2nd team.

They were from a prominent local school (where he was involved), and he was friends with their parents.

I said:
“No.”
He looked at me in shock.
“What did you say?”
“No. Those two boys over there have far more potential. I am going to pick them.”

He started arguing with me. Told me he’d make sure I was replaced if I didn’t “do as I was told.”

So I told him I’d make it fair.
“I’ll make the two boys I want to pick play 1v1 against the two boys you want me to pick.” 👀

My guys (pictured) were Dylan & Cody.

“Absolutely not. He said , That is not how we pick teams. You will pick the two boys I am telling you to pick. Your two have never played representative basketball before.”

🙋🏻‍♂️ “No. I won’t. I will pick the two boys I see have the potential.”

I then sat the entire trial group around the 3 point line, and told them to cheer and make the environment intense.

Game 1 — Cody won 7-1.
Game 2 — Dylan was up 6-0, and the other kid’s parent took him off the court and walked out.

These two boys helped me start my programs in QLD, which is ultimately now evolved into what it is today.

- Cody scored 45 points v the U16 Malaysian National team.
