Abdul El-Sayed, a former public health official who harnessed Democratic frustration with the party establishment, narrowly defeated Rep. Haley Stevens in Michigan’s U.S. Senate primary, setting up a crucial test for progressives in a key battleground state. 

In the days leading up to the Aug. 4 election, AP Photographer Julia Demaree Nikhinson documented El-Sayed’s final campaign stops in Detroit — including his March of the Many to the Spirit of Detroit statue, church services and a pool party with content creators. 

El-Sayed will face Republican Mike Rogers, a former congressman, in November in a race that will help determine control of the Senate.
