did you know pinkpantheress is a chess grand slam champion? ♟️

pink (aka victoria beverley walker) is pictured above after she won an under 25 chess tournament in bromley over a year ago, and it sparked a lot of conversation around her connection to the game

not only has victoria said that if she never became a musician that chess is the path she would have taken, but she also is a direct descendent of one of the UK’s best female chess players of all time

her aunt is the great susan lalic who held the title of both grand master and international master who won 5 national titles with a peak rating of 2405… that is better than 99.9% of players, and only 400 off the highest ranking ever posted by magnus carlsen

i also love the line that she tweeted out saying ‘i don’t mention the chess lineage that runs in my family enough girl’ because it is such a fun and subtle mention that none of us expected

my love for chess strongly rekindled this year so i have been covering the game’s crossovers with music whenever i find them, and this was too good not to highlight (i currently sit at a 777 elo if you are curious)
