A new Environment Agency review has found that only around 15% of England's rivers are in good ecological condition, while fewer than 7% of lakes meet the same standard.⁠
⁠
The report also found that no river, lake or coastal water assessed passed a separate chemical pollution test. The biggest issue is phosphate pollution from sewage and farm runoff, with around half of rivers still above safe levels.⁠

Campaign group River Action says intensive poultry farming is becoming a growing threat to rivers including the Wye and Severn, while experts warn drought and climate change could make pollution even more concentrated.⁠
⁠
The government says new laws and a £22 billion investment by water companies will help improve England's waterways by 2030.⁠
