Farewell, Landsat 7 🌎🛰️

After 25 remarkable years observing Earth, the Landsat 7 satellite will take its final bow and be officially decommissioned on June 4, concluding a significant chapter in Earth observation.

While Landsat 7’s mission is ending, Landsat 8 and 9 continue to capture stunning snapshots of our planet every eight days, ensuring a continuous flow of vital data for farmers, city planners, and disaster recovery efforts.

The data from Landsat 7, which recorded critical events like Hurricane Katrina and the aftermath of 9/11, will remain archived, supporting scientific discovery for generations to come.

🛰️1:  These patterned stripes are part of Erg Chech, a desolate sand sea in southwestern Algeria, Africa, where the prevailing winds create an endlessly shifting collage of large, linear sand dunes.

🛰️2:  Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Landsat data was used to monitor the extent and movement of the slick.

🛰️3:  Swirling Kármán vortices trail behind Alexander Selkirk Island in the South Pacific. As wind-driven clouds flow past the island’s steep, mile-high peak, the disrupted air currents spin into these striking patterns.

🛰️4:  Landsat 7 captured this image of center-pivot irrigation (green circles) in the Saudi Arabian desert in 2000.

🛰️5:  Landsat 7 imagery was used to create a full continent mosaic of Antarctica, known as LIMA (Landsat Image Mosaic Of Antarctica).
