I visited a place in Japan where the volcano erupts almost EVERY DAY 🌋

📍 Sakurajima, Kagoshima

Around 3,000 people call this island home, living at the foot of one of Japan’s most active volcanoes. Evacuation ports are scattered around the island, built in preparation for a major eruption — yet thankfully, they’ve never had to be used for an actual evacuation.

Today, they’re also unexpected spots to stop, explore and take in some incredible views of Sakurajima. Yunohira Observation Deck, it gets surprisingly close: about 2.5 km (1.6 miles) from Sakurajima’s crater. 

It sits at about 373 m elevation and is the highest point on Sakurajima accessible to the public. Visitors aren’t allowed within 2 km of the Minamidake and Showa craters, so Yunohira gives you that dramatic “I’m right on an active volcano” feeling while remaining in the permitted visitor area.
