#TSRUpdatez: On Friday, #LuigiMangione formally pled guilty to federal stalking charges in the 2024 murder of #UnitedHealthcare CEO #BrianThompson, admitting that he trailed him and gunned him down. According to apnews, Mangione told the court, “On the morning of Dec. 4, 2024, I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan, and he died.”

Mangione was charged by federal and state prosecutors, and this guilty plea now resolves one of the two cases. His legal team could reportedly seek to have the state case thrown out on double jeopardy grounds. His sentencing is set for December 18th. Both the federal and state charges could lead to a life prison sentence.

Mangione said to the court that he targeted Thompson “after years of enduring severe pain from a broken back and navigating the obstacles of the health insurance system.” According to officials, Mangione was not a UnitedHealthcare customer.

The trial on state murder charges against Mangione is scheduled to start in September. However, at the moment, it’s unclear whether the trial will proceed after he pleaded guilty in the federal case. Back in February, Mangione told the judge, “It’s the same trial twice. One plus one is two. Double jeopardy by any commonsense definition.”
