The #UniversityOfMichigan recently announced a new grading system that it will implement for first-year students in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts during their first semester, starting in the fall of 2027.

According to abcnews, the school announced it will eliminate letter grades for students’ inaugural semesters and instead give students a pass (P) or no credit (NC) on their final transcripts.

The school shared its reason for the program and said, “Helping all students establish early momentum has been recognized as the most important element in U-M’s campus-wide Student Success Initiative. We believe that covering grades will help students start strong and curb the mental health crisis unfolding among college-aged individuals.”

ABC News notes that instructors will still assign letter grades for students to know, but students’ final GPAs and first-semester transcripts will not reflect them.

The university stated that it will maintain students’ actual first semester grades internally for administrative purposes. Once beginning their second semester, students’ grades will be recorded and reflected on their transcripts and GPAs for the remaining semesters they are enrolled. The grading system will not apply to first-year students in the university’s 18 other colleges.
