China’s fight against mosquitoes is starting to look like something straight out of a sci-fi movie. 🦟🤖
One of the wildest approaches is an AI-powered mosquito defense system that combines LiDAR, millimeter-wave radar, computer vision, and a precision laser to spot mosquitoes while they’re flying and take them out before they can land.

The company behind the technology, Photon Matrix, says its system can identify tiny airborne targets within milliseconds and eliminate as many as 30 mosquitoes per second. That said, its real-world effectiveness still needs more independent testing.

But the technology gets even stranger: China is also fighting mosquitoes with other mosquitoes.

Scientists can release specially bred male mosquitoes carrying Wolbachia, a naturally occurring bacterium. These males don’t bite people, but when they mate with wild females, the resulting eggs don’t develop successfully.

Large-scale trials in Guangzhou have shown major reductions in mosquito reproduction and significant decreases in the local biting population.

So the future of mosquito control could involve AI lasers, biological mosquito releases, drones, and advanced tracking systems instead of relying entirely on chemical spraying.
