Scientists in China may have just made infrared vision a reality. 👁️🔴

Researchers at the University of Science and Technology of China developed soft contact lenses containing tiny nanoparticles that can transform near-infrared light into colors the human eye can actually see.

In tests, people wearing the lenses were able to detect infrared signals, recognize blinking patterns, and tell different infrared wavelengths apart by color — all without batteries or an external power source.

And here’s the wildest part: the lenses still worked with their eyes closed. 👀

Because near-infrared light can pass through eyelids more easily than visible light, closing the eyes can actually reduce interference from ordinary light.

But don’t expect full thermal vision just yet. These contacts currently provide relatively limited visual information and require a sufficiently strong infrared signal. For sharper infrared images, the researchers used an additional glasses-based system.

The potential applications are huge  from encrypted communication and anti-counterfeiting to search-and-rescue technology and possibly assisting people with certain types of color vision deficiency.

This could be an early step toward giving humans access to a part of the light spectrum we normally can’t see.
