On this day in 2014, WWE announced the signing of Kevin Steen to NXT. He would be renamed Kevin Owens before his debut match. 

Steen spent more than a decade on the independent scene before signing, including a run as ROH World Champion. He won the NXT Championship within six months of his televised debut and captured the Universal Championship in his first year on the main roster.

Twelve years after the announcement, Owens is a former NXT and Universal Champion and recently returned from injury, a comeback Bill Apter called a breath of fresh air.
