Before ECW landed on TNN in 1999, watching the promotion meant knowing exactly which local channel carried it and what odd hour it aired.

ECW Hardcore TV debuted in April 1993 and ran in syndication, market by market, on a patchwork of local stations. There was no single national home. The time slot depended entirely on where you lived, and in several markets, the channel carrying ECW was a regional sports network, the same channels that aired local baseball, hockey and college sports.

In Philadelphia, the show aired on SportsChannel Philadelphia on Tuesday evenings, later adding a 2 a.m. Friday replay, with ECW sitting in the lineup alongside Flyers and Phillies programming. When that station went off the air in 1997, the show moved to broadcast stations, first WPPX-TV 61 on Wednesdays at 9 p.m., then WGTW 48, where it aired Friday or Saturday nights at 1 or 2 a.m.

In Florida, fans found ECW on the Sunshine Network, the state’s regional sports channel. In the Chicago market, it bounced between WCIU 26 at 2 a.m. on Saturdays and WPWR 50 at 10 p.m. Many fans discovered the promotion by accident, flipping channels after midnight or looking for a game.

The late slots had a side effect. Early broadcasts often aired with the profanity and violence unedited, which became part of how ECW got noticed.

Even after ECW on TNN launched in 1999 with a national Friday night slot, Hardcore TV kept running in syndication as the promotion’s flagship show, airing until December 2000.
