LIVE REVIEW: You can always tell when you’re in the presence of greatness.
There’s a buzz in the air, a sense of something less than ordinary, a higher power at work. Music has always had that magic quality about it, but when it comes to a band like Judas Priest, it really is like staring living history in the face.
And as they once again return to Catton Park, they demonstrate why they continue to carry such an aura with a metal show as timeless as it comes.
From a gritty ‘Breaking The Law’ to a thrilling ‘Turbo Lover’, a rallying ‘Painkiller’ to a grandiose ‘Lightning Strikes’, every song is delivered with a viscosity and vigour that some bands of today can only dream of possessing. All orchestrated by the Metal God himself, Rob Halford, stalking the stage in head-to-toe leather and studs, he hits every shrieking high and thunderous low with gusto, rolling the years back with absolute ease. It’s as inspiring to watch as it is sensational, a statement of what it means to continue to let what you love drive you as proudly and powerfully as possible.
And as a cheeky ‘Hell Bent For Leather’ and funky ‘Living After Midnight’ round out this masterclass, it’s difficult not to let that sense of pride wash over you, too.
Heavy metal’s indelible legacy is still firmly intact, and it is a privilege to still be able to have Judas Priest firmly holding the flagpole.
