You didn’t lose your athleticism. You lost your confidence in your body.

Those aren’t the same thing.

Athleticism doesn’t disappear after one bad injury, one scary fall, one “that never used to hurt” moment. Your strength, your coordination, your motor patterns are still in there. What’s missing is trust. The part of you that used to move without asking permission first.

This is a real thing, by the way. It has a name: kinesiophobia, fear of movement or re-injury. It’s one of the biggest predictors of who actually gets back to their sport after an injury, and it’s separate from tissue healing. You can be cleared, tissue-healed, “good to go” on paper, and still hesitate on a cut, still brace before a landing, still not trust the thing your body was built to do. That’s not weakness. That’s your nervous system doing its job, protecting a spot that got hurt once.

The fix isn’t more rest. It’s not “just get back out there” either. It’s graded exposure, small, controlled reps of the exact thing you’re afraid of, done enough times that your brain updates the file. Confidence isn’t willed back into existence. It’s built the same way strength is: load, tolerate, adapt, repeat.

So if you’re technically cleared but still don’t trust the movement that’s not you being dramatic. That’s a known, well-documented part of recovery. And it responds to the same thing your training always has: reps.
