WASHINGTON INSIDER

The United States is making a major digital infrastructure push across the Caribbean — and Washington is putting secure networks and trusted vendors at the center of the strategy.

U.S. officials joined Caribbean government officials, regulators and industry leaders in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, this week for the Caribbean Association of National Telecommunications Organizations Annual General Meeting. The United States pressed regional governments to exclude untrusted vendors from information and communications technology systems while moving toward upgraded and secure networks.

The effort goes beyond talk.

Ahead of the conference, the State Department convened the U.S.-Caribbean Digital Transformation Accelerator on Aug. 7-8, bringing Caribbean regulators together with U.S. companies and partners to advance country-specific projects involving undersea cables, 5G financing, satellite connectivity and artificial intelligence readiness.

Washington also announced a new Caribbean and Central America undersea cables initiative designed to expand trusted, high-speed connectivity and strengthen network resilience and security.

The State Department is pairing the initiative with legal and technical assistance through the Commerce Department's Commercial Law Development Program. That assistance will help governments develop trusted-vendor legislation and strengthen protections for critical infrastructure.

The message from Washington is clear: digital infrastructure is now an economic and security priority, and the United States wants to play a central role in how the Caribbean's next generation of networks is built.
