Happiness often begins with gratitude.

It's easy to believe happiness is waiting somewhere ahead of us. We tell ourselves we'll be happier when we make more money, reach the next goal, solve the next problem, move somewhere new, or finally get everything in life exactly where we want it.

But happiness doesn't always work that way.

Sometimes happiness begins when we stop looking at everything that's missing and start appreciating what is already here.

Gratitude can be found in the simplest moments. Waking up to another day. Hearing the voice of someone you love. Sharing a meal. Laughing until your stomach hurts. Having somewhere to call home. Getting another opportunity after something didn't work out the first time.

Life doesn't have to be perfect for you to appreciate it.

You can have problems and still recognize your blessings. You can be working toward something better while being thankful for where you are today. You can experience disappointment and still find something worth smiling about.

Gratitude doesn't erase life's difficulties. It simply reminds us that our difficulties aren't the entirety of our lives.

So today, notice something good. Appreciate someone who has been there for you. Celebrate something you've accomplished. Enjoy an ordinary moment without rushing through it.

Sometimes we spend so much time searching for happiness that we overlook the places where it has already found us.
