There is no reason to wait until high school or college to teach your kids about financial literacy.

My 9-year-old daughter earns her own income by helping out around my office. When we go out and she wants a treat or a meal, she uses her own earned money to pay for it.

People at the counter are usually surprised to see a kid paying for her own stuff, but it builds immediate awareness. Understanding the connection between effort, earning, and spending at a young age sets them up for life. Start early.
