Somewhere around 2019, the FD2 Type R went from 'oh cool, the one they never sold here' to a car people were quietly importing and hoarding like they knew something the rest of the market didn't. Turns out they did. The K20A in this thing isn't just another Honda four-cylinder — it's the last naturally aspirated Type R motor Honda built before turbocharging took over, and it revs like it's personally offended by the concept of a redline.

But here's where most FD2 builds go sideways. Guys throw bolt-ons at it expecting Civic Si gains and get frustrated when the stock ECU pulls timing and fights every modification. That's why Hondata comes first — not second, not after the intake, not after the header. First. Unlock the ECU, get it on a proper tune, and suddenly every dollar you spend after that actually shows up on the dyno.

The uncomfortable truth is the NA power ceiling on the K20A is real. You're looking at maybe 240-250 wheel with full bolt-ons, cams, and a professional tune. That's it. If you need 350+ you're talking forced induction and a completely different budget conversation. But the guys who actually drive these cars at the limit know the FD2 was never about peak numbers — it's about how that power delivers across 8,400 rpm through a limited-slip diff in a chassis that weighs nothing and communicates everything.

Wheel fitment is refreshingly simple: 18x8.5 ET52 square all four corners. No stagger, no spacer math, no rubbing at full lock. Just clean fitment that actually works with the suspension geometry Honda spent years developing. Budget your weak points early too — synchros in third gear get tired, rear trailing arm bushings go soft, and the OEM clutch wasn't designed for anything beyond stock power. Address those before they address themselves at the worst possible moment.

The FD2 is the last analog Type R Honda will ever build. The window to own one before prices go completely stupid is closing faster than most people realize.

What's the first mod you'd do to a How to build a?
