The E46 M3 is overpriced and you already know it — change my mind.

Everyone treats the E46 like it's the holy grail of M cars while the E92 sits there with a screaming 4.0L S65 V8 that revs to 8,300 rpm and nobody bats an eye. You're paying a nostalgia premium on the E46 to deal with subframe cracking AND rod bearing anxiety, when the E92 only has one of those problems. The S54 inline-6 is legendary, sure, but the S65 is literally a detuned F1-derived V8 shoved into a daily-drivable chassis and somehow that's the "lesser" M3?

The E46 crowd will come for me on this, and honestly the E46 does win on steering feel and raw analog simplicity — I'm not delusional. But when clean E46 M3s are commanding $25-35K and you can grab a solid E92 for similar or less money with more power, a more rigid chassis, and better crash safety, the math stops making sense. You're buying a poster car, not a driver's car.

Do rod bearing preventive maintenance on either platform, budget $1,500-2K for the job, and move on with your life. But only one of these cars also needs you to reinforce the rear subframe mounting points before they crack through the unibody. That's not a mod, that's structural life support.

The E92 M3 is the smarter M3 money right now. The E46 is a collection piece. Know which one you're buying.
