The 718 Cayman might be the best-driving car under six figures. It also might be the most expensive car under six figures to keep on the road once the warranty clock runs out.

Porsche built the 718 around a turbocharged flat-four that makes great power but introduces maintenance costs the old naturally aspirated flat-six never had. The turbo system adds complexity, the cooling setup on S models has a well-documented pattern of issues that get expensive fast, and if your PDK needs attention you're looking at a bill that makes a clutch job on a GT car seem reasonable. None of this means the 718 is a bad car — it means it's a car that punishes buyers who budget for the purchase price and forget about everything after. The people who love theirs planned for it. The people selling theirs at 40K miles didn't.

So here's the real question: is the 718 Cayman a genuine mid-engine sports car bargain that rewards owners who do their homework, or is it a maintenance trap disguised as an attainable Porsche — and the old 981 with the flat-six was the one to buy all along? Pick your side.

Save this for the day the hunt gets serious.
