Dick DeVenzio used to say most players don't have "moves," they have habits — the same three things they always do, dressed up to look like variety.

A fake that doesn't threaten the defense isn't a fake. It's just a pause. The defender has to believe the shot is coming. That belief is the whole move.

Everything after it — the drive, the finish, the space you just created — is just collecting on a bet you already won in his head.

Great players create space before they even take a dribble.

On-Ball: Create space.

Off-Ball: Chase space.

On Defense: Restrict space.

Be the Puppet Master
A fake without a plan is just wasted motion. The true art of basketball is deception.

Have a clear intention: If your plan is to attack left, your fake must force the defender to lean right.

Control the rhythm: Don't just drive to collision. Drive to manipulate.

Make them leave their feet: When you get into the paint and force a defender into the air, you are the puppet master. They are simply following your script.

"Players don't rise to the occasion—they fall back on their habits."
