🔎 Today’s Daily Sift: Space 

Space is becoming self aware.

Yesterday, ESA’s Meteosat Third Generation satellite watched the Moon’s shadow cross Earth during the August 12 total solar eclipse from 36,000 kilometers above the planet. 

Millions watched from below.

The satellite watched the entire system.

Today comes the deeper signal.

Astranis announced Perceptor, a new spacecraft platform designed to monitor activity in geostationary orbit.

Its sensors will analyze other spacecraft, investigate satellite anomalies and assess potentially hostile behavior.

It can also maneuver repeatedly through geostationary orbit and operate as part of a larger constellation. 

This is where the space economy is moving.

Not just launch.

Awareness.

Tracking.

Defense.

Navigation.

Infrastructure.

Geostationary orbit supports some of the world’s most important communications, weather and military systems.

Knowing what is happening there becomes strategically valuable.

Capital is following.

Astranis raised more than $450 million earlier this year, while Firefly just reported its first quarter above $100 million in revenue and expanded its Lockheed Martin launch agreement to as many as 25 missions through 2031. 

Meanwhile, Earth crossed through debris from Comet Swift Tuttle overnight as the Perseid meteor shower peaked under dark new moon skies. NASA said favorable locations could see around 50 meteors per hour. 

Forward Hypothesis

The first space age was about getting there.

The next will be about knowing exactly what is happening once we arrive.

Space is becoming infrastructure.

And infrastructure demands awareness.
