I set up ChatGPT to notify me whenever NOAA issues a meaningful update to its El Niño forecast.

This morning, it did.

NOAA now says El Niño is strengthening, with a greater than 90% chance of becoming a very strong event through fall and winter 2026 to 27.

Even more striking, NOAA now puts the probability of a historic October through December event at 69%, potentially exceeding previous El Niño events in its record dating back to 1950.

For Southern California, that matters.

The odds are tilting toward a wetter pattern as we move deeper into fall and winter. Strong El Niño events can strengthen the southern storm track, increasing the potential for more Pacific storms, heavier rainfall, mountain snow, flooding, strong surf, and debris flows around burn scars.

It does not guarantee a historic rainy season.

But the signal is getting harder to ignore.

The Pacific is changing. Southern California may feel it this winter.
