On August 12, 1851, Isaac Singer patented a machine for commercial use that would revolutionize the textile industry during the latter part of the Market Revolution. This machine was first invented in 1790 by Thomas Saint. It is Isaac Singer’s patents though that made the machines more accessible.

Of course, that machine was the sewing machine! By 1852, tailors and sewing businesses in Sacramento, California had sewing machines in their shops, which greatly increased production over sewing by hand.

For today, Jared letterpress printed an image of a sewing machine from a photo engraving. This cut was gifted to us by Al from New Jersey. The text below states, “Sewing Machine,” and was typeset in 48 point French Clarendon font. This was printed with red rubber base ink using our Washington hand press.
