We are saddened to share the news that National Rodeo Hall of Famer Phil Lyne has died. He was 79.

One of the most accomplished all-around cowboys in rodeo history, Lyne was among a select handful of cowboys to be inducted into the National Rodeo Hall of Fame and the PBR Ring of Honor and to receive the PBR’s Ty Murray Top Hand Award.

The National Rodeo Hall of Fame and the PBR Hall of Fame are both housed here at The Cowboy.

Born Jan. 18, 1947, in San Antonio, Texas, Lyne began roping at age 4 and competed in the Texas Youth Rodeo Association before becoming a standout collegiate cowboy at Southwest Texas State University.

Lyne entered professional rodeo in 1969 and immediately established himself as one of the sport’s most gifted young competitors, earning the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s Rookie of the Year title. He received the Bill Linderman Award—recognizing excellence in both timed and roughstock events—four times, in 1970, 1971, 1972 and 1976. He was in the inaugural class of the ProRodeo Hall of Fame.

During the 1971 season, he captured his first world championships in calf roping and all-around competition. During that championship run, Lyne reportedly competed on 46 different roping horses. He repeated as world champion in both calf roping and the all-around in 1972.

“Phil Lyne was by far the best all-around cowboy I’ve ever seen in the rodeo arena,” his close friend and fellow NFR champion Ace Berry told San Antonio’s KENS-5. “Phil could do anything.”

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and the rodeo community.
