The common saying in the sports industry is often “it’s not what you do but who you know”, but at the end of the day, knowing someone is not enough to just magically open doors.

Once you meet a contact in a space you want to break into, the work doesn’t stop there: it’s then becomes all about being personable and showing that you’re enjoyable to work with. 

Simply put - being a GOOD person goes a long way, and it might be one of the most underrated things you can do to find opportunities in this industry.

You can be the most talented person in the room, but if you aren’t easy to communicate with or someone who isn’t fun to be around, you’re digging yourself a grave that’s hard to get out of.

I’ve always expressed I would rather work with someone with half the talent or skill, but is a hell of a good time to have on set or to collaborate with, than to work with someone who has all the talent in the world but has half the work ethic, or has a personality that makes them difficult to work with.

Networking isn’t just about saying “we should connect”, but also just as much about being someone people want to bring around when opportunities open up.
