Most photographers save their polarizer for lakes and rivers. On a car set, it's one of the most useful tools we own.
ㅤ
Here's why.
ㅤ
It controls reflections.
Cars are huge and covered in reflective paint. Add lighting to the scene and that light bounces straight back into the lens. A polarizer lets us manage that instead of fighting it in post.
ㅤ
It cuts through glass.
Shooting into or out of a windshield is a pain without one. On a dealer network TV spot, we mounted a camera to the hood and needed a clean shot through the glass. The polarizer removed the cloud reflections. A hidden light in the passenger seat did the rest. Clean shot, broad daylight.
ㅤ
It protects the lens.
On off-road and overlanding shoots, the camera sits close to tires throwing rock and dirt. A direct hit on a bare lens can cost thousands. A polarizer worth a few hundred dollars takes that hit instead.
ㅤ
One filter, three uses!
