Seagrass ecosystems could be worth trillions of dollars, new study finds.

Seagrass is one of the most overlooked climate tools we have. As a blue carbon ecosystem, seagrass captures carbon up to 35 times faster than a rainforest, cloning itself into vast meadows that lock carbon into their roots and the sediment below.

It’s not about putting a price on nature itself, but on the services it provides. We are simply translating that value into a language everyone understands: money. Today, an ecosystem’s ability to sequester carbon carries real economic value in the form of carbon credits.

New research from Dr. Ralph Chami and Dr. Carlos Duarte shows just how feasible, and lucrative, restoring seagrass to its historical global extent could be. In about 200 years, seagrass could generate up to US$2.27 trillion in carbon credits.
