Stop teaching young people that extraordinary outcomes arrive dressed as luck.

Most of the people we call “lucky” spent years putting themselves in positions where luck could eventually matter.

They took risks. They developed skills. They failed. They lost money. They were doubted. They kept going when stopping would have been completely rational.

Then, when it works, we put them on a podcast and they say, “I got lucky.”

Of course luck played a part. It always does.

But they didn’t buy a raffle ticket. We need to stop confusing humility with denying the work. Own the sacrifice. Own the risk. Own the skill. Own the failures. Tell young people what it actually took.

Because Britain does not have a shortage of intelligence or ambition. We have become uncomfortable with risk.

And in a world moving this quickly, excessive risk aversion may be the greatest risk of all.

You cannot put luck on a mood board. You cannot make it a KPI. You cannot schedule it for Q4.

What you can do is work, learn, build, fail, adapt and keep putting yourself in positions where something extraordinary can happen.

Let’s make ambition respectable again.

Let’s get comfortable talking about risk, skill, hard work and failure.

And when we win, let’s be honest about what it took.
