How does ASML help print features smaller than the wavelength of light? 🧠🔬

The answer is computational lithography—a powerful combination of physics, mathematics, and software that helps make today's most advanced chips possible.

When a chip is manufactured, a lithography system projects intricate patterns onto a silicon wafer. But at incredibly small scales, light doesn't behave perfectly. Diffraction, optical effects, and tiny manufacturing variations can distort the intended pattern.

So instead of simply printing the original design, computational lithography predicts how the pattern will distort and mathematically modifies it beforehand.

One key technique is Optical Proximity Correction (OPC).

The mask pattern is intentionally changed—sometimes adding tiny shapes that look strange—so that after light passes through the optics and the wafer is processed, the final pattern comes out much closer to the original design.

In other words:

The computer intentionally changes the design so the physics produces the design you actually want.

This becomes incredibly important as transistor features shrink to just a few nanometers.
