Nobody talks enough about how emotions impact your training.

This morning I dropped my daughter off at kindergarten for the first day.

And it hit me.

We spend so much time talking about sleep, nutrition, heart rate, recovery and training load.

But we’re humans.

Emotions are part of performance too.

Maybe you had a stressful day at work.

Maybe something is going on with your family.

Maybe you’re anxious before a race.

Maybe you’re incredibly excited.

All of that comes with you when you train.

And I don’t think the answer is always to ignore it and push through.

Identify the emotion. Name it. Then work WITH it, not through it.

Some days that might mean you still crush the workout.

Some days you might need to adjust.

And some days simply getting out the door is the win.

For me, there are three things that help keep emotions from turning one difficult day into falling completely off track:

1. Accountability

Have something or someone that keeps you connected to what you said you were going to do.

2. Purpose

Know why you’re doing this in the first place.

A goal gives you direction when your emotions are pulling you somewhere else.

3. Have empathy for yourself

Zoom out.

One workout doesn’t define your fitness.

One bad race doesn’t define you as an athlete.

One emotional day doesn’t mean you’ve lost your discipline.

Consistency isn’t being perfect every day.

It’s being able to experience real life, adjust when you need to, and keep moving forward.

So I’m going for my run this morning.

Not pretending I’m not emotional.

Not trying to outrun the feeling.

Just bringing it with me.

Because being an athlete is only one part of who I am. And today, being a dad is hitting a little harder.
