4 ways to make sure your easy runs are actually EASY

And I put these in this order intentionally.

Because I care about what your body is telling you more than what your watch is telling you.

1. Can you nasal breathe?

This is my favorite test.

Can you comfortably breathe through your nose without constantly needing to open your mouth and gasp for air?

If yes, you’re probably keeping the effort controlled.

If not, slow down.

2. Can you hold a conversation?

You should be able to talk in complete sentences.

Not three words followed by a massive breath 😂

If you’re running with someone, you should actually be able to have a conversation.

3. What’s your actual pace?

Now we start looking at data.

Your easy pace should be meaningfully slower than your harder training paces.

But don’t become obsessed with a specific number.

Heat, hills, fatigue, sleep, and accumulated training load can all change what “easy” looks like that day.

4. What’s your heart rate?

Heart rate is useful.

But I don’t want it overriding everything your body is telling you.

If you can nasal breathe, comfortably talk, and the pace feels appropriately easy, I’m not stopping every 30 seconds because my watch says I’m three beats above a predetermined zone.

Use heart rate as another piece of information, not the entire decision.

That’s why my order is:

Breathing → Conversation → Pace → Heart Rate

Your easy runs have a purpose.

Don’t turn them into another workout you’re trying to win.
