This is also known as cohabitation, and it’s pretty common for adults in the U.S. Around three-quarters of Americans in their late 30s or early 40s have cohabited at some point in their lives. 

Our recent analysis found that the median cohabiting relationship lasts 18 months before ending in marriage or a breakup.
