American politics is more nuanced than a red-blue divide. Many Americans hold a complex mix of values and beliefs – ones that don’t always fit neatly into either party. 🇺🇸

These cross-cutting sets of values present challenges for both the Republican and Democratic parties. To build winning coalitions, they must address the concerns of people who don’t fully support either party’s agenda. 🤝

Our analysis sorted the public into nine distinct groups based on their political and cultural values, not their party.

Four groups are highly ideological, overwhelmingly back one party over the other and are more politically active than others, so their voices are amplified in U.S. politics.
🔴 No Apologies Right
🔴 Faith First Conservatives
🔵 Loyal Liberals
🔵 Leftward Progressives

Americans in the other five groups are more mixed in their political values, and in some cases, much less attentive to politics. Together, these five groups are a majority of the public.
🔴 Unconventional Right
🔴 Pragmatic and Polite Right
🔵 Order and Opportunity Left
🔵 Left-Out Left
⚪️ Tuned-Out Middle
