Starting tomorrow, Canada’s storm warnings get more targeted to reduce false alarm & fatigue‼️👀🌪️

Environment Canada is launching a more precise tornado and severe thunderstorm warning system in an effort to reduce “alert fatigue” and make emergency alerts more targeted.

Instead of warning huge predetermined regions, forecasters can now draw specific areas around the storm’s projected path and send alerts mainly to people actually at risk. 🗺️📍

Ottawa has seen exactly why that matters. The city received tornado warnings on July 21 and again on August 10, but neither resulted in a confirmed tornado in Ottawa. The July 21 red warning was issued around 4:10 p.m. and was ended about 10 minutes later.

Then on August 10, a tornado warning was issued for Ottawa at 5:29 p.m. before the threat was downgraded shortly afterward, with a severe thunderstorm warning remaining in place. 📲🇨🇦

That doesn’t mean the warnings were “fraudulent” though. A better and accurate way to frame it is that they were short-lived warnings that did not lead to a confirmed Ottawa tornado, which is exactly the type of situation the new system is designed to better target and hopefully reduce.

Thoughts on this⁉️🤔⤵️
