A Damascus court sentenced former dictator Bashar al-Assad to death in absentia earlier today, signaling a major step towards Syria’s transition away from conflict and towards justice and accountability. Alongside Assad’s sentence came a similar verdict for his cousin, Atef Najib, who has been on trial in Syria for the arrest and torture of a group of young boys that sparked the revolution in 2011.
