I see the first time I finally got to hold mine.

His mother was seven months pregnant when I got locked up on a parole violation.

By the time I came home, he was already nine months old.

We had already met through FaceTime. I talked to him every chance I got.

But this was different.

This was the first time I could make him laugh.

The first time I could hold him.

The first time I could kiss his forehead, hear his laugh, and just be his dad.

Moments like this are the reason I’ll never take a single day with him for granted.
