The Portland City Council gave a green light to city negotiators to send a 20-year lease proposal to the Trail Blazers that sees the public covering up to $573 million in renovation costs at the Moda Center.

The city agrees to cover $120 million in the near-term and another $275 million in ongoing building upkeep over the next 20 years, for a total investment that is expected to exceed $450 million.

In return, the city is asking for about $6 million a year in rent and payments in lieu of property taxes, as well as other benefits for the surrounding community. Despite Wednesday’s approval, some councilors called the Moda proposal “the worst deal in the country” saying the city and state didn’t ask critical questions.
